The world is made up of a beautiful bouquet of different languages, unique to countries and regions. But there is one language that no matter where you are from, it is understood. The language of music.
Music plays a significant role in every culture, and is present in diverse aspects of our lives. For babies, toddlers and children, it is no less important to them than it is to us. In fact, it could be even more fundamental in their everyday lives.
Children experience music in a number of ways, with play being one of the most common. As they explore music through this, they make magical discoveries about the world, themselves, and those around them. It has a significant role in their development, coordination and social emotional skills.
We’re going to look at five key reasons why music is important for our little ones.
1.Music develops fine and large motor skills and control
The physical action of making music, whether it be tapping, clapping, clicking, bouncing, or even dancing to it, assists in building and strengthening fine and large motor skills, as well as enhances hand-eye coordination. All of these activities contribute to the creation of important connections across multiple regions in children’s brains, during crucial stages of development.
2. Music can help improve literacy and numeracy
Exposure to music can help enhance babies, toddlers and children’s natural ability to decode sounds and words. It assists little ones in recognising sound patterns, as well as teaches repetition, rhyming, counting and even pattern sequencing.
3. Creates a sense of belonging
It not only builds neural connections, but also connections with those in the home, school and play environments.
4. Builds intimacy
A significant impact on children’s development comes from close relationships and bonds, and music can help in creating these! From even before birth, parents instinctively play music for their babies, and after, they use it to calm and soothe children, to express love, to celebrate, engage, interact and teach.
When family members or caregivers sing lullabies, little ones feel a sense of protection, care, comfort and love.
5. It creates pure, simple, happiness
Live music is captivating for babies, toddlers and children. It creates complete excitement and delight in the little ones, lifting their mood and enhancing positive energy and feelings. It creates opportunities for laughter, interaction and affection.
Like a diamond in the sky, music and its magic plays a significant role in our lives, and the lives of our little ones. It is an expressive, shared, inventive, portable way to be together. As simple as it may seem, it is a powerful force which can change and enhance the development of our young ones.
