The first blooms of Spring always make our hearts sing!
Witnessing your garden wake up after a sleepy Winter, yawning with the buds of flowers, stretching out its arms of leaves and foliage, blinking with the scatter of blooms, it truly is something that awakens the heart.
Spring never lets us down, and comes around as sure as the sun comes up every morning. Living through this season each year never gets old, and in fact, it only get more magical when you have children to enjoy it with you! They open your eyes to all its secret joys you may not have not have been aware of before…from crawling little creatures, to the incredible range of different colours it boasts and shows off, the humbling sun’s rays which wrap around your little ones children play in the garden, to the night sounds of crickets and owls playing a sweet symphony under the stars.
Children remind us to slow down, look further, harder, deeper, and see our surroundings with innocent eyes searching only for pure beauty, happiness and joy.
Embrace this enchanting time of year with your littles…it only comes around once a year. To celebrate all the joys of this Season, we have put together some ideas and activities for your families to enjoy!
- Planting seeds
Visit your local gardening store with your kiddies, and let them pick what to plant! Not only is this a great way to get them excited from the start, it’s also a brilliant opportunity for incidental learning; have them tell you the colours, spell sound/spell them out if they are old enough, count the seeds, and more.
Talking to them about how to plant and look after the seeds and plants is also important in their development, as they will learn sequencing and responsibility…win win!
(While at the gardening store, have a look out for kiddies gardening gloves and tools…these will not only be practical, but make your heart skip a beat with the cuteness!)
1. Flower Pressing
Take a walk in your garden, the park, or even along the pavements in your suburb, and take a little basket for flower collections. There are some fantastic flower drying kits available, but if you don’t have one, the good-old book trick from our youth will do the job! These pressed flowers can be used to make birthday cards for friends, decorate school books or personal files, and so much more!
2. Bird Feeders
Make your garden the favourite drink and snack stop for the local birds! There are so many different ways to make DIY birdfeeders with your kiddies, and you can really get creative with these!
Here are a few easy ideas to try:
3. Scavenger hunts and I-Spy
Make up a card with a range of different items from the garden (think stones, heart shaped petals, green leaves, brown twigs…), and have your children find them in the garden and mark them off as found!
Or you can use one of these printables:
Playing I-Spy is also such fun in a Spring garden; have them spy things that are blue, or round, or something starting with the sound g…
4. Have a Teddy-bear Picnic!
We can’t think of anything much better than putting a blanket out under the budding trees, and sharing a snack with our children and their esteemed teddy-bear and doll guests! Don’t forget to pack the snack boxes, Bickies, and tea sets.
We could really go on and on, listing all of the incredible activities, games, crafts and fun you can have in Springtime with your children. What a marvelous time of year it is, sparking new beginnings and colouring the world around us.
Nothing ever seems impossible in Spring!
